The Role of Sports Massage in Preventing Injuries

What is Sports Massage?

Sports Massage is a specialised form of deep tissue massage aimed at meeting the needs of individual clients. Whether that is treating chronic pain, injury rehabilitation, improving mobility, addressing muscle imbalances, helping with post-exercise recovery or promoting general well-being. Let’s look at the role Sports Massage plays preventing injuries.

Sports Massage techniques help to improve flexibility and reduce muscle tension, enabling the body to move more freely. Enhanced blood circulation promotes faster healing and recovery. Sports massage can be used to address potential weak points that may be prone to injury. It can also be used as part of a warm up and cool down routine.

Whether you play a sport, have an active job or are just struggling with general day to day activities, massage treatment can help you to recover from and potentially prevent further injury.

You don’t have to be sporty to have a sports massage as the techniques are effective for people from a wide range of backgrounds and activity levels.

Reducing Muscle Imbalances to Prevent Injury

Injuries are more likely to occur if a muscle is overworked while it’s opposing muscle is weak. All muscles work in pairs, each one with an opposing action. When the balance between tension, strength and flexibility becomes distorted, muscles and other connective tissues are more susceptible to injury.

By addressing muscular imbalances, sports massage treatment can play a role in preventing potential injuries.

I use a wide range of general and advanced massage techniques with my clients, but I also empower my clients to continue their treatment at home by providing home care exercises, stretches, strengthening exercise and self massage techniques to help correct the imbalances.

Pre and Post Event Massage

For those people who are competing or taking part in events, whether that is running, cycling, equestrian eventing or simply just training hard at the gym, massage can be a helpful part of a warm up and cool down routine.

Massage can prepare a client for an event or training session by encouraging the muscles to fire quickly and ensuring the muscles are warmed up, ready for the demands of the activity. This can help prevent injuries that may occur simply because the muscles were not responding quickly enough.

Massage is also very useful in exercise recovery. Clients will often book a session with me after a marathon or other intensive event to help reduce the amount of muscle stiffness they experience. Post event massage is also useful in picking up on any injuries or little niggles that may have occurred during the event so that treatment can begin in a timely manner.

The Importance of Regular Sessions

How many sessions a client will need varies based on the individual circumstances and presenting condition. Regularity, however is important. Retraining and rebalancing muscles takes time and weekly (perhaps even twice weekly) appointments are usually recommended in the beginning in order to see the best results.

With regards to injury prevention, regular weekly or monthly maintenance treatments (depending on the intensity of the client’s sport or job etc) are advisable. Regular treatments enable us to deal with problems as they arise, minimising the risk of it leading to injury. For example in the case of a repetitive strain injury, if muscle tension is addressed early on, it may help to minimise the risk of a full tendon rupture if the condition is left untreated while the repetitive action is continued.

Home Care

Injury prevention needs a holistic approach and that is why I always offer home care advice where needed so that clients can continue their treatment between massage sessions. As well as providing exercises to do at home, we may explore life style changes too. Sometimes, something as simple as changing a pair of running shoes, moving the position of your chair in relation to your TV or carrying your backpack in a different way can make all the difference.
